Nvidia CEO and founder Jensen Huang has donated $10 million to Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund to support victims of the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River basin of Rasuwa district, Nepal’s Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle said.
In a video message, Wagle expressed gratitude to Huang for the contribution, saying it had helped push total donations to the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund beyond NPR 10 billion (about $66 million).
Wagle said the substantial contribution could encourage others to support relief and rehabilitation efforts for those affected by the disaster.
According to the latest situation report issued by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the death toll from the Rasuwa floods had reached 1,259 by Thursday evening, while 5,053 people remained missing.
Nepal has received assistance from several countries and international agencies since the floods struck last week.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah said India had been providing assistance from the first day of the disaster. India has so far supplied 74 tonnes of relief and rescue materials in five phases and deployed expert teams to affected areas.
China has provided NPR 300 million and 50 tonnes of relief supplies, while Nepal has requested 30 Bailey bridges. Pakistan has supplied 86 tonnes of relief materials, Sri Lanka has pledged $1 million and Bangladesh is preparing relief shipments.
The US has pledged $500,000, while Australia has committed $1 million and is preparing to send experts and drone operators. The UAE has supplied 83 tonnes of essential materials and pledged up to $10 million, while Qatar has provided 40 tonnes.
The UK, European Union, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Czech Republic and Norway have also announced financial assistance. France, Luxembourg and Latvia have provided relief materials.
The World Bank has pledged $167 million in concessional loans, while the Asian Development Bank has committed $5 million in budgetary support and $150,000 in technical assistance.
