Actor Anant Joshi, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming streaming show Chumbak, has said that members of the Parsi community are as much Indian as anyone else.
The actor made the remarks while speaking to IANS during the promotions of the show in Mumbai’s BKC area, alongside Arjun Bijlani, Helly Shah, Delnaaz Irani and Amyra Dastur.
Speaking about his experience of exploring Parsi culture for the comedy series, Joshi said he had received approval from members of the community and noted that the show was not intended to examine historical facts in detail.
“I’m Parsi approved. It was all in the writings. We didn’t check any historical facts here as it’s a comedy show,” he said.
Joshi stressed that he saw no distinction between Parsis and other Indians, saying, “I think Parsis are as Indian as it could be. Why are we still after so many years thinking that it’s a community? I don’t see any difference.”
He acknowledged that Indians come from diverse cultural backgrounds but said his experience on the show highlighted food as a strong point of commonality.
“For me, the thing that I learned was this love for food, which was there on set,” he said, adding that people from different backgrounds would often share how things were done in their respective cultures.
“So, you all can agree that the commonality was food. We all love food,” Joshi added.
The Parsi community traces its ancestry to Persian Zoroastrians who migrated to India centuries ago, particularly following the Arab conquest of the Sasanian Empire.
Chumbak is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 10.
