US Vice President J.D. Vance has praised his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, for balancing her public responsibilities and family life as her summer reading challenge approached its deadline, just six weeks after the couple welcomed a baby.
Vance used the opening minutes of a White House press briefing to remind children and parents participating in the programme to submit their entries before the deadline.
“For all the kids at home and their parents, importantly, today is — or I believe tomorrow is the last day of the Second Lady’s summer reading challenge,” Vance said.
He directed families to the White House website and urged them to submit their reading challenge materials on time, noting the strong response to the programme.
Vance then turned to a personal tribute to his wife, highlighting how she had continued her public work while caring for their six-week-old child.
“We now have a six-week-old baby who is happy and healthy,” he said. “So honey, I love you. I’m very proud of you.”
Addressing Usha directly, he added that she had remarkably managed to keep everything together despite the demands and chaos of family life.
Vance later mentioned his wife while responding to a light-hearted question about his recent weight loss. He said the effort began with a conversation between the couple before Lent, when he decided to give up sugar and social media.
He subsequently sought health advice from Bobby Kennedy, who recommended a more demanding diet featuring high-protein foods and sauerkraut.
“My advice to you is that if you want to lose weight, call Bobby Kennedy,” Vance joked. “And if you want to enjoy what you eat, do not call Bobby Kennedy.”
The remarks provided a rare personal moment during a briefing otherwise focused on Iran, energy prices, artificial intelligence and the upcoming midterm elections.
Usha Vance is the first Indian-American to serve as Second Lady of the United States. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she was raised in California and studied at Yale University and Yale Law School.
