BJP MLA Sarbori Mukherjee has demanded that Jadavpur University be renamed after Sri Aurobindo, arguing that the institution should reflect the ideals and legacy of the nationalist leader associated with its origins.
Speaking at a programme held on the university campus, the BJP legislator from the Jadavpur Assembly constituency proposed renaming the institution “Sri Aurobindo University” and called for unity against what she described as anti-national forces.
Sri Aurobindo served as the first Principal of Bengal National College, an institution that later evolved into Jadavpur University after Independence.
The demand was raised during programmes organised on the campus by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Haripada Bharati Smriti Raksha Samiti. The events included a national flag march, a rendition of Vande Mataram, displays of portraits of eminent scholars and Vedic chanting.
Addressing the gathering, Mukherjee said recent political developments in West Bengal had created greater space for people to express nationalist views and oppose Maoist and Left ideologies.
She also made a contentious reference to the recent Assembly election results, claiming that a different outcome could have triggered serious unrest in the state. She said those who oppose nationalism would continue to face protests.
Reiterating her demand to rename the university, Mukherjee said a mass petition could be submitted to the state Higher Education Department, West Bengal Chief Minister and Union Education Minister.
“We have to stay united. The more we unite, the more anti-national forces will retreat,” she said, adding that the proposed name change would be a matter of pride for Jadavpur.
Mukherjee also appealed to supporters to initiate the process of submitting petitions to the concerned authorities seeking the university’s renaming.
