Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday welcomed leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping as they arrived at Bharat Mandapam for the second day of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Ghanaian President John Mahama, Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud were among the dignitaries who arrived at the venue.
Leaders from BRICS member and outreach countries are scheduled to participate in an open session focused on the core pillars of this year’s theme — “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth”.
The discussions will cover areas of mutual interest and explore ways to strengthen cooperation among member states across various sectors.
On Saturday, BRICS countries unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration, which commended India for hosting the Outreach/BRICS Plus Dialogue segment of the summit and said India’s chairship had provided “new impetus” to international cooperation and solidarity.
The declaration reaffirmed the BRICS commitment to mutual respect and understanding, sovereign equality, solidarity, democracy, openness, inclusiveness, collaboration and consensus.
It also called for deeper cooperation across the grouping’s three pillars — political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people cooperation — while seeking to advance peace, sustainable development, inclusive growth and a more representative and fair international order.
The early consensus on the joint statement was described as a major diplomatic breakthrough amid divergent geopolitical positions among BRICS members.
On Saturday evening, Modi hosted a gala dinner for BRICS leaders and other dignitaries. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus were among those present.
A specially curated vegan dinner showcasing India’s culinary diversity was the centrepiece of the evening, reflecting themes of sustainability, inclusivity and mindful hospitality.
The programme also featured the cultural performance “Navarasa — The Universe of Shared Emotions” and the BRICS Symphony, “One Rhythm, Many Cultures”, bringing together musicians from BRICS member and partner countries.
