Three minors, aged between four and five years, have been detained for questioning after an alleged vandalism incident inside a Shiva temple in Sherpur village of Bihar’s Nalanda district, officials said on Sunday.
The incident took place on Saturday, when some children allegedly entered the temple premises, pelted stones and bricks and attempted to damage the idol. CCTV footage from the temple reportedly captured the incident and showed the children throwing stones, urinating inside the premises and allegedly using abusive language.
Local residents said they maintained restraint and informed the police immediately to prevent the situation from escalating. After examining the CCTV footage, Nalanda Police detained three children for questioning.
Local youth Suraj Kumar said residents initially found bricks and stones scattered around the temple and cleaned the premises before checking the CCTV recordings. He also alleged that access to the temple had been affected by encroachments on surrounding pathways and the closure of one of the roads, claiming similar incidents had occurred earlier.
Temple priest Aman Kumar alleged that the area has witnessed incidents of stone-pelting and theft in the past, saying such incidents hurt the sentiments of devotees.
The temple falls in Ward No. 41 of the Bihar Sharif Assembly constituency. It was formally inaugurated by Bihar Sharif MLA Sunil Kumar on Mahashivratri this year after being constructed at a cost of Rs 14.90 lakh. Regular prayers have been held every morning and evening since its inauguration.
Officials said construction work remains incomplete and the absence of a boundary wall has made it easier for people to enter the premises.
Police have registered an FIR based on a written complaint submitted by Aarav Raj, and further legal action is underway.
Additional police personnel, magistrates and police officials have been deployed around the temple to maintain law and order and prevent any communal tension. Officials said the situation remains normal and under control.
