Renowned casting director Mukesh Chhabra has come out in support of television actors, praising their professionalism, discipline and ability to adapt, days after actor Rohit Roy described television as a “dustbin medium”.
Without naming anyone, Chhabra took to X on Sunday to highlight the contribution of television actors to the entertainment industry.
“Most of the actors we have found are from television, and I truly believe television actors are amazing. They have an incredible memory, they work every single day, they are extremely professional, they adapt quickly, and they know how to handle the demands of the job,” he wrote.
He further praised their “discipline, dedication, and commitment”, adding that while he loves all actors, he has “a little extra love for TV actors”.
Chhabra’s comments come after Rohit Roy faced criticism for his remarks about the television industry during an appearance on the Kindle Cast YouTube channel.
Asked whether the TV industry had become more professional while losing some of its devotion to the craft, Roy said television was a “dustbin medium” because its content was quickly forgotten.
“This question has been asked of me several times, and I sometimes feel that I shouldn’t come across as ungrateful. But, television is a dustbin medium. You watch it today, it’s like yesterday’s newspaper. Tomorrow, you forget about it,” Roy had said.
He also criticised what he described as the repetitive nature of television content in India and said there was limited creativity amid the volume of programming being produced.
Chhabra, known for his work as casting director on films including Dhurandhar, Jawan and Dangal, has also directed Dil Bechara, which starred late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
His remarks have added to the ongoing discussion over the contribution and creative value of television in the Indian entertainment industry.
