Actor Rahul Roy has recalled the early days of his acting journey, revealing that he would quietly observe established actors including Pooja Bhatt, Anupam Kher and Vinod Khanna on the sets of Mahesh Bhatt’s Daddy before making his Bollywood debut with Aashiqui.
Rahul recently appeared on the dance reality show India’s Best Dancer Season 5, where he spoke about his first experiences of being around film sets and learning by watching seasoned performers.
Recalling his time on the sets of Daddy, Rahul said he would sit and observe the actors as they performed, trying to understand how they approached their craft.
“So when I went there, he was filming ‘Daddy’ film, so Pooja Bhatt, Vinod Khanna and Anupam Kher were there. I used to sit on the chair, and I used to see all these guys acting, kaise karte hain,” he said.
Rahul admitted that when he first faced the camera, he did not really understand what acting entailed. However, he said he approached every scene with complete commitment.
He also recalled filming a divorce sequence with Reena, saying he simply followed the requirements of the scene and gave it his all.
Looking back at his 36-year journey in cinema, Rahul expressed gratitude to everyone who had contributed to his career.
He also revealed how he was cast in Aashiqui. After returning from London, Rahul had begun pursuing modelling. His mother, who was working with UNICEF at the time, spoke to Mahesh Bhatt, eventually leading to their meeting.
“Hairstyle maine London mein hairstylist Colleen se karwaya tha. Uske baad main Mumbai aaya aur modelling kar raha tha. Meri maa UNICEF mein kaam karti thi aur usi dauraan unki Mahesh Bhatt se baat hui,” Rahul recalled.
According to the actor, Mahesh Bhatt offered him Aashiqui within 10 minutes of their meeting.
Released in 1990, Aashiqui marked Rahul Roy’s debut as a leading actor. He starred in the romantic musical alongside Anu Aggarwal, and the film went on to become a major success.
India’s Best Dancer Season 5 airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 p.m. on Sony Entertainment Television.
