Severe weather, including thunderstorms and lightning, claimed multiple lives across Bihar on Wednesday, with fatalities reported in Siwan, Gaya and Purnea districts.

In Siwan, a grandfather and his 19-year-old grandson were killed after lightning struck them while they were grazing cattle in Darveshpur village under Hussainganj police station. Another person accompanying them was injured.

The deceased were identified as 54-year-old Bandhu Chaudhary and his grandson, Prince Kumar. According to officials, the group had gone outside the village to graze cattle when rain began and weather conditions deteriorated. They reportedly moved towards a nearby tree for shelter when lightning struck the three people.

Bandhu Chaudhary and Prince Kumar collapsed, while the third person managed to reach the village and alert residents. Villagers and family members took all three to Siwan Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared the grandfather and grandson dead. The injured person was provided treatment.

Hussainganj police station in-charge Shailendra Singh said the bodies were taken into custody and the required inquest and post-mortem procedures were completed before they were handed over to the relatives.

In Gaya district, 45-year-old Sangeeta Devi died after being struck by lightning in Tola Ukhad Badhai Bigha village under Wazirganj block. She had gone to graze goats near a forest area and was returning home when lightning struck her shortly before she reached the village.

Locals took her to Wazirganj Community Health Centre, where Nandlal Prasad confirmed that she had died. Her body was subsequently to be sent to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College Hospital in Gaya for post-mortem.

Sangeeta, whose husband Sunil Yadav had died previously, was living at her father Mithilesh Yadav’s home and worked as a labourer. She is survived by two daughters. Villagers have sought compensation for the family under applicable disaster-relief provisions.

In Purnea, a woman was killed and four others injured when lightning struck in Mahinwa Pansoi village under Nagar police station. Three women from the same family were among those affected. Pachniya Devi, wife of Hariur Rishidev and a resident of Chhotki Sahara, died in the incident, while her daughter Rekha was injured. The injured were undergoing treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital in Purnea.

The incidents have highlighted the risks posed by lightning during thunderstorms. Residents have been advised to avoid open areas and isolated trees and seek safer shelter during severe weather.
