India will take on South Korea on hard courts at Seoul’s Olympic Tennis Centre on September 18-19 in the second round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers, with the winner securing a place in the Final 8.
The two sides are closely matched in the Davis Cup rankings, with South Korea placed 16th and India 19th. South Korea hold a narrow advantage in their head-to-head record, having won six of their 11 previous encounters.
India are scheduled to announce their squad for the tie on August 10.
The hard-court surface could play an important role in the contest, with South Korean players generally more accustomed to the conditions. When the teams last met in Chandigarh in 2016, India opted for grass and recorded a 4-1 victory in their Asia/Oceania Group I tie.
India booked their place in the second round after a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Bengaluru in February. Dhakshineswar Suresh was the standout performer, winning both his singles matches and partnering Yuki Bhambri to victory in the doubles.
Suresh then delivered in the decisive fifth rubber, defeating Guy den Ouden 6-4, 7-6(4) to seal India’s victory. The result also marked India’s first appearance in the second round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers since the current format was introduced in 2019.
South Korea produced an equally notable result in the opening round, defeating 2016 champions Argentina 3-2 in Busan. Kwon Soonwoo played a key role in the comeback victory while continuing his military service.
The Seoul tie will be a winner-takes-all contest for a place in the Davis Cup Final 8, scheduled for November. South Korea have previously reached the 16-team Davis Cup Finals in 2022 and 2023.
India will be looking to extend its recent progress under the current qualifying format and secure a place among the world’s top eight teams.
