We are not having any negotiations with the US right now: Iran FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Aragchi said on Sunday that Tehran is currently not engaged in negotiations with the United States, while intermediaries continue efforts to find a way to restart talks.

Speaking to reporters at the Centre for Political and International Studies of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aragchi said Tehran would not agree to resume negotiations until Washington ends what Iran describes as violations of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and addresses the alleged breaches, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported.

“We currently have no negotiations with the United States. Intermediaries are still making efforts to find ways to resume negotiations,” Aragchi said.

He added that, from Tehran’s perspective, negotiations could not resume until the alleged violations of the MoU were brought to an end and the United States made amends for the breaches.

Aragchi also said Iran and Oman were in the final stages of negotiations over a new maritime route in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Iranian Foreign Minister, experts are working on alternative routes to replace existing ones.

He clarified, however, that an agreement on a new route would not amount to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which he said would depend on several conditions.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Saturday that Tehran would continue pursuing a “path of peace” under the MoU if Washington helped create an atmosphere of trust.

Speaking at a press conference, Pezeshkian said the MoU could serve as the basis for further engagement, provided the United States moved away from what Tehran considers an atmosphere of distrust.

He said the current period was an opportune time to reach an agreement, citing what he described as solidarity, strength and unity within Iran.

The statements from the Iranian leadership come as diplomatic efforts continue through intermediaries to explore the possibility of renewed engagement between Tehran and Washington.
