Actress Gulfam Khan has urged young women facing societal pressure over marriage or motherhood to make decisions based on what will bring them long-term happiness and fulfilment.
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Gulfam said women should look ahead and consider how they would feel about a decision a decade from now before making an important choice.
“Imagine yourself ten years from now. If the decision you’re making today will still make you happy and fulfilled after ten years, then make that decision confidently,” she said.
The actress stressed that individuals have the right to choose their own path as long as their decisions do not harm or exploit others.
“It’s your life. As long as you’re not hurting or taking advantage of anyone, live your life without regrets,” she added.
Gulfam was also asked whether she had personally faced questions or pressure surrounding marriage and motherhood. She said her immediate family had always respected her choices and supported her decisions.
“Personally, my family has always respected my decisions. My husband, my in-laws, and my siblings have always supported me,” she said.
However, she acknowledged experiencing pressure from people outside her immediate family, including relatives, neighbours and friends. According to Gulfam, having the backing of one’s close family can make such external opinions easier to handle.
“Yes, there’s peer pressure from relatives, neighbours or friends. But when your immediate family stands by you, outside opinions don’t matter much,” she said.
Gulfam is known for playing Nazneen in the television show Aladdin – Naam Toh Suna Hoga. She has also appeared in popular shows including Naamkarann, Laado 2 and India Calling.
