Riyadh, October 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Esports World Cup (EWC) has expanded its qualification programme for the 2027 edition, opening new pathways for established tournament organisers and grassroots gaming communities worldwide to compete for places at the global championship.

The EWC Qualifier Programme, part of the Road to EWC initiative, aims to reach 1.8 million players through more than 400 events next year. It will offer two routes: EWC Direct Qualifiers, which connect established competitions to the championship, and EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers (SLCQs), designed to widen grassroots participation.

The initial satellite programme will cover Chess, Counter-Strike 2, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves and Street Fighter 6, with additional titles expected to be announced.

Faisal Bin Homran, Chief Product Officer at the Esports Foundation, said the initiative would connect established competitive structures with local communities and create more opportunities for players to progress towards the global event.

Under the Direct Qualifier pathway, tournament organisers will continue to operate and fund their competitions under their own identities, retain local commercial opportunities and comply with EWC and publisher requirements.

The satellite route will allow esports federations, associations, cyber cafés, universities, gaming venues, festivals and local tournament organisers to apply to host qualifying events. Winners of approved competitions will secure guaranteed entry into the corresponding EWC Last Chance Qualifiers scheduled for next summer. The foundation will also provide accommodation and visa support to winners.

The inclusion of chess could create another opportunity for Indian players. Four Indian Grandmasters competed at the 2026 EWC. Vidit Gujrathi reached the final of India Rising, the official chess qualifier, while Karthik Venkataraman finished among the top 12 in the Last Chance Qualifiers. In 2025, Grandmaster Nihal Sarin, representing S8UL Esports, reached the quarter-finals after progressing through the Last Chance Qualifier.

Both pathways will follow publisher requirements and EWC competitive standards, including anti-cheat measures, officiating procedures and result verification.

Applications for the 2027 programmes are open through the official Esports World Cup website. The submission deadline is December 20, 2026, and approved tournaments must conclude by June 1, 2027.
