Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted an international narcotics trafficking syndicate operating across the Delhi-NCR region, arresting five people, including three foreign nationals, and recovering heroin and MDMA valued at around Rs 12 crore in the international market, officials said on Saturday.
The accused, arrested during July, have been identified as Nigerian nationals Moris Okalie, 52, and Ibegbu Chigozie Samuel, 50; Ghanaian national Emmanuel, 38; Sameer alias Nanhe, 28, of Nand Nagri in Delhi; and a 36-year-old woman identified as Lady from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Crime Branch, the syndicate was involved in the wholesale and retail procurement, storage, transportation and distribution of commercial quantities of heroin and MDMA through a network of associates.
The operation was conducted by the Eastern Range-I team under the supervision of ACP Sunil Srivastava and DCP (Crime Branch) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav as part of intelligence-gathering efforts under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
Acting on specific intelligence, police laid a trap near a hospital in Shahdara during the intervening night of July 19 and 20 after receiving information that Okalie would arrive there with a drug consignment.
Okalie was intercepted carrying a black shoulder bag. A search resulted in the recovery of 2.004 kg of heroin and 863 grams of MDMA, both classified as commercial quantities. An FIR was subsequently registered at the Delhi Crime Branch police station under Sections 21 and 22 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
During Okalie’s police custody remand, investigators arrested Emmanuel and Ibegbu Chigozie Samuel from Chander Vihar in Nilothi. Police recovered 254 grams of heroin from Ibegbu and 14 grams of MDMA from Emmanuel.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Sameer alias Nanhe from Shalimar Garden in Ghaziabad, from whom 300 grams of heroin was allegedly recovered. Lady was later arrested from Paschim Vihar in Delhi.
Police said Sameer and Lady were active members of the organised syndicate and allegedly handled various stages of the drug trade, including procurement, storage, transportation and distribution.
Investigators also found that Sameer had previously been booked in two cases under the Delhi Excise Act and NDPS Act at Nand Nagri and Bindapur police stations. Lady was also found to have a previous NDPS case registered against her.
Overall, police recovered 2.554 kg of heroin, 881 grams of MDMA and 11 mobile phones. The total international market value of the seized narcotics has been estimated at around Rs 12 crore.
Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network and trace the source and intended destinations of the drugs.
