The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 2.165 kg of gold worth an estimated Rs 3.09 crore from a passenger at Nagpur railway station and arrested him for allegedly transporting smuggled precious metal, officials said on Sunday.
The action followed intelligence that gold brought into India through the India-Bangladesh border was being moved onward by train.
Acting on the information, a DRI team in Nagpur mounted surveillance at the railway station after learning that the consignment was being transported by a passenger travelling on the 12102 Dnyaneshwari Express.
The passenger was intercepted and searched after the train arrived at Nagpur. Officials recovered 16 gold bars that had allegedly been concealed on his person.
The passenger was arrested and the seized gold taken into custody for further investigation. The DRI is examining the source of the consignment and its intended destination.
The seizure comes amid a series of recent operations by the DRI against organised smuggling and trafficking networks. According to the agency, 20 people, including five foreign nationals, have been arrested in these operations and various forms of contraband seized.
The seizures included around 9.5 kg of gold valued at approximately Rs 14 crore, along with hydroponic weed, red sanders, prohibited wildlife products, e-cigarettes, foreign-origin poppy seeds and areca nuts.
In one operation on July 29, two foreign nationals who had arrived from Dubai were arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. DRI officials recovered 40 foreign-origin gold bars weighing 4 kg from specially created cavities in their baggage.
In separate operations conducted jointly with the Border Security Force along the India-Bangladesh border, DRI personnel also seized around 3.2 kg of foreign-origin gold.
The agency said the arrests and seizures have exposed sophisticated concealment methods allegedly used by organised criminal syndicates involved in smuggling and trafficking.
Further investigation is underway.
