The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Saturday assured consumers that E20 petrol supplied through the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) network meets prescribed quality standards and can be used with confidence.
The ministry issued the assurance amid recent media reports raising concerns over moisture and chloride levels in Ethanol Blended Motor Spirit (EBMS), commonly known as E20 petrol. It said OMCs had undertaken additional intensive nationwide testing covering the entire EBMS supply chain.
The ministry said the findings showed that fuel quality remained consistently within prescribed limits, with extensive random testing providing no evidence of contamination that could warrant concern.
“Contrary to certain assertions being made, based on extensive random testing through scientifically designed tests, the evidence shows that there is no cause for any alarm on account of fuel contamination,” the official statement said.
The ministry said fuel quality remained a top priority for OMCs and that any issue potentially affecting vehicle performance or consumer confidence would be addressed promptly through scientific investigation and corrective action.
As part of strengthened surveillance, OMCs are conducting water-ingress and density tests between eight and 12 times a day at every retail outlet. Mobile fuel quality testing laboratories have also been deployed at various locations, while test results are being independently validated through fuel laboratories.
“These multipronged stepped-up testing protocols across the supply chain have validated our highest fuel quality standards,” the statement said.
The ministry further said more than 100 additional randomly selected petrol samples tested across various refineries showed that chloride content remained consistently low, with all samples recording levels at or below 1 ppm.
According to the ministry, the results demonstrate the continued effectiveness of quality-control mechanisms integrated into India’s refining and fuel-dispatch processes.
The government reiterated that E20 petrol supplied through the OMC network conforms to prescribed specifications and urged consumers to continue using the fuel without apprehension.
