Ukraine has reached an agreement with the United States for monthly deliveries of interceptor missiles for its Patriot air defence systems, but the quantities remain below Kyiv’s requirements, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
Speaking to reporters in Belgrade, Zelensky confirmed that Washington would provide Patriot interceptors to Ukraine every month. He said, however, that the agreed volumes would not be sufficient to meet the country’s air defence needs.
Zelensky also said Ukraine was expected to receive fewer interceptor missiles in 2026 than in 2025, although he did not disclose the quantities.
The Ukrainian President had earlier said that actual deliveries of air defence interceptors from allied countries had declined, attributing much of the shortfall to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The development comes as Ukraine continues to seek stronger air defence capabilities amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the prospects of negotiations to end the war. In July, Trump said he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky both wanted to reach a peace agreement following separate discussions with the two leaders.
Speaking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before a bilateral meeting in Ankara ahead of the NATO summit, Trump said he had held lengthy conversations with Putin and subsequently spoken with Zelensky.
“I think they both want to make a deal,” Trump said, while acknowledging that a settlement might not be imminent. He added that Erdogan was also playing a constructive role in efforts to end the conflict.
Trump said negotiations could sometimes make progress when expectations were at their lowest.
