Barcelona has expressed condolences following the death of Jorge Messi, father of club legend Lionel Messi, who passed away aged 68 in Rosario, Argentina, on Saturday after a prolonged illness.
The Catalan club issued a statement through its official social media accounts, conveying sympathy to the Messi family and acknowledging Jorge’s important role in his son’s remarkable football career.
“The president of Barcelona and the board of directors express their sincere condolences on the death of Jorge Messi, father of Barcelona player and legend Lionel Messi, and convey, on behalf of all Barcelona supporters, their condolences to the Messi family,” the club said.
Barcelona also thanked Jorge for the faith he placed in the club during the early stages of Lionel’s career, when the Argentine moved to Spain as a youngster.
“Barcelona thank Jorge Messi for his commitment to our club, and for his trust in us at the beginnings of the footballing career of his son Leo, and in the years that saw his career reach the highest levels of brilliance,” the club added, concluding its tribute with “Rest in peace.”
Jorge played a significant role in managing Lionel’s sporting and professional affairs from an early age and was closely involved in his move from Argentina to Barcelona. Lionel subsequently developed into the central figure of one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Jorge died in Rosario, where he had been undergoing medical treatment. The clinic treating him said he died at around 2 a.m. local time but did not provide further medical details, respecting the family’s privacy.
Lionel had previously spoken about the difficult period he was experiencing amid concerns over his father’s health. His emotional reaction after scoring for Argentina had also prompted speculation about Jorge’s condition, following which the Messi family requested privacy.
Real Madrid also expressed condolences after Jorge’s death, paying tribute to the father of their former Barcelona rival and one of football’s most celebrated players.
