The standoff between the Jharkhand government and students protesting alleged irregularities in Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations continued on Saturday, with a second round of talks ending without any breakthrough as the agitation entered its 15th day.
The meeting, held at the State Guest House in Morabadi, lasted nearly one hour and 45 minutes. Four state ministers participated in the discussions along with a delegation of protesting students associated with the Jharkhand Democratic Revolutionary Front.
The students maintained that their agitation would continue until the examinations under dispute were cancelled in full. They also reiterated their plan to hold an Assembly gherao on August 10.
The government delegation comprised ministers Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Deepika Pandey Singh, Chamara Linda and Sanjay Prasad Yadav. The ministers heard the students’ concerns and appealed to them to call off their sit-in.
The government maintained that it was committed to ensuring transparency in the state’s examination system.
After the meeting, Sudivya Kumar Sonu said consultations would not be limited to a single student organisation and that the government intended to seek views from youths and other stakeholders across Jharkhand.
As part of the exercise, the government has launched a dedicated email ID to receive suggestions on examination reforms. The minister said recommendations submitted by students and citizens would be considered while preparing a comprehensive policy.
Sonu said the dialogue process would continue and that the government would also hold discussions with other student organisations. He accused opposition parties of attempting to politicise the issue, while asserting that the government had responded to the allegations from the beginning by ordering a CID probe, conducting raids and making arrests.
The protesting students, however, remained firm on their demand for cancellation of the disputed examinations and said the movement would continue until their demand was met.
The second round of talks followed a meeting between the government and student representatives on Friday, which also ended without a concrete resolution. With neither side willing to alter its position, the deadlock continues as the planned August 10 Assembly protest approaches.
