Amargarh MLA Prof Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra has called for a scientific and long-term policy to address the rapid depletion of groundwater in Punjab, stressing the need for comprehensive measures to conserve and recharge the state’s precious water resources.
Raising the issue through a non-official resolution during the 13th session of the 16th Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Gajjan Majra said agriculture, the economy and overall prosperity of Punjab were heavily dependent on groundwater. He warned that continued depletion of groundwater could expose future generations to a severe water crisis if effective measures were not taken in time.
He urged the state government to formulate special programmes for rainwater conservation and scientific groundwater recharge. He also called for large-scale implementation of rainwater harvesting systems and measures to protect existing water resources.
Gajjan Majra stressed that such initiatives should not remain confined to government departments but should involve villages, farmers and the public as active stakeholders.
He said the efforts being undertaken by the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, for water conservation and sustainable agriculture were commendable. However, he said these initiatives needed to be expanded and supported by a long-term strategy based on scientific data and local requirements.
The MLA said government schemes alone would not be sufficient to tackle the water crisis. He called for greater public awareness to prevent wastage, conserve rainwater and protect natural water bodies, besides creating a wider social movement for water conservation.
Gajjan Majra said Punjab’s water resources were an inheritance meant for future generations, making their protection not merely an immediate necessity but also a responsibility towards the future.
He expressed confidence that coordinated efforts by the government, farmers, experts and the public could help safeguard Punjab’s water resources and put the state on the path of sustainable development.
