Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has assured the staff, trust members and local residents of Miri-Piri Medical Institute, Shahabad Markanda, that medical services and employees’ salaries will continue without disruption until the court delivers its final decision in the matter concerning the hospital.
During his visit to the institute, Dhami said the SGPC would continue to discharge its responsibilities and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for patients as well as payment of staff salaries while the legal proceedings remain pending.
He said the SGPC had constituted a separate trust to manage the Miri-Piri Medical Institute, with the SGPC president serving as its head. Established in 2006, the hospital has been providing healthcare services to people in Haryana and adjoining areas.
Dhami said the institute’s OPD, cath lab, knee-related treatments and other medical services were being utilised by a large number of people. He particularly highlighted the cath lab, which was started three years ago and has been functioning successfully.
He stressed that SGPC-run hospitals and educational institutions do not discriminate on the basis of caste, religion or any other consideration. Providing medical assistance according to people’s needs, guided by the principle of sarbat da bhala (welfare of all), remains the institution’s fundamental objective, he said.
According to Dhami, the SGPC has provided nearly Rs 142 crore in assistance to the Miri-Piri medical institution so far. An annual provision of around Rs 8 crore is also made in the SGPC budget, while approximately Rs 25 crore had previously been provided to the institution from Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar.
He said the SGPC also aims to develop the hospital into a medical college and that the required infrastructure for this purpose has already been created.
On the ongoing legal matter, Dhami said the SGPC had always respected court decisions and was proceeding in accordance with the law. Following the May 12 judgment, the committee filed a Letter Patent Appeal (LPA) in accordance with its legal rights. The matter was subsequently heard by a Division Bench of the High Court, which stayed proceedings relating to the newly constituted medical board.
He said the matter was therefore currently sub judice and clarified that the issue was not about taking possession of the institution but about ensuring healthcare services and fulfilling the institution’s responsibilities.
Dhami said the SGPC had already released Rs 1.40 crore towards salaries of hospital employees and that the remaining salaries would also be released. He added that efforts were being made to contact doctors and other staff members who had left the hospital in recent times and urge them to return.
He reiterated that the SGPC would continue to fulfil its responsibilities fully until the court’s final decision. The priority, he said, was to ensure smooth hospital administration, timely payment of salaries and continued medical services for the people of Haryana.
Dhami said his visit was not intended to take possession of the institution but to reassure hospital staff, patients and the people of Haryana that neither medical services nor employees’ rights would be allowed to suffer because of the pending court proceedings.
