Indian equity markets ended lower on Friday as selling pressure in financial and private banking stocks, along with concerns over rising global geopolitical tensions, weighed on investor sentiment.
The Nifty 50 closed down 65.35 points, or 0.27 per cent, at 24,570.65, while the BSE Sensex declined 455.59 points, or 0.58 per cent, to settle at 78,499.17.
Market analysts said the 24,600-24,700 zone remains an important resistance area for the Nifty, while 24,500 is a key immediate support level. A sustained breach below this mark could lead to further profit booking and push the index towards the 24,400-24,300 range, they noted.
Investor sentiment remained cautious throughout the session, with market participants reducing exposure to financial stocks. The Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Private Bank indices emerged as the biggest sectoral laggards, putting pressure on the benchmark indices.
Among Nifty stocks, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and Trent were among the top losers and contributed significantly to the market decline.
However, the broader market displayed relative strength. The Nifty MidCap index gained 0.22 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index edged down 0.05 per cent, indicating selective buying beyond frontline stocks.
Sector-wise, automobile and information technology stocks provided support. The Nifty Auto and Nifty IT indices were among the top-performing sectoral indices during the session, limiting the overall losses.
Analysts said Friday’s trading reflected a risk-averse approach among investors, with global developments overshadowing gains in select sectors.
Market experts also highlighted the positive impact of State Bank of India’s strong performance, supported by healthy credit growth, improving asset quality and stable margins, which has strengthened confidence in banking and public sector banking stocks.
