Ranvir Shorey Breaks Silence on Viral Reel Row: ‘Why Was the Prime Minister Dragged Into It?’

Mumbai, August 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Actor Ranvir Shorey has responded to the controversy surrounding his recent social media exchange, questioning why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was brought into an argument that began over a promotional reel.

Ranvir had recently recreated a viral Gen Z protest-themed reel with his Khosla Ka Ghosla 2 co-stars Anupam Kher, Boman Irani and Parvin Dabas. The video attracted significant attention on social media.

The controversy erupted after an X user reshared the reel with a sarcastic remark directed at Ranvir. The actor responded with an abusive comment, drawing criticism from social media users. Since the account displayed a woman’s photograph as its profile picture, some users accused the actor of using misogynistic language.

Addressing the backlash in a video posted on Instagram on Saturday, Ranvir said he believed the criticism directed at him was disproportionate. He also questioned the introduction of politics into what he described as a light-hearted video made with his colleagues.

“The Prime Minister was also dragged into the abuse. So what did it mean? We are making a fun reel with our team, and you are bringing politics into it,” he said.

Ranvir argued that abusive language should not be justified or excused based on gender. He questioned the view that a man should not respond if the person abusing him is a woman, saying respect should apply equally to everyone.

He also urged people not to use liberalism as a justification for bullying or abusing others.

The actor said public figures frequently face personal attacks but generally choose not to respond. However, he maintained that individuals have the right to respond when they feel an exchange has crossed a line.

“You have no idea how many things you have to hear day and night when in public life,” Ranvir said, adding that people generally remain silent but may choose to respond when they consider an attack unreasonable.

He described such a response as his “moral, ethical, and constitutional right”.
