AAP Punjab media in-charge Baltej Pannu on Saturday accused the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and its president Sukhbir Singh Badal of repeatedly changing their political positions for electoral gains, alleging that the party was now seeking an understanding with the BJP to revive its political fortunes.
Pannu targeted Sukhbir Badal over his reported support for some Bills introduced by the BJP-led Union government, contrasting it with the Badal family’s earlier stand on the farm laws.
“Today Sukhbir Singh Badal is saying that he fully agrees with some of the Bills being brought by the BJP government at the Centre. But the people of Punjab remember very well that when the farm laws were introduced, the entire Badal family was seen making videos in support of those very laws,” Pannu said.
He alleged that the Badals changed their position on the farm laws only after facing widespread public opposition and subsequently sought to project themselves as supporters of farmers.
Pannu further claimed that the Akali Dal had “fallen completely out of the hearts” of Punjab’s people and was now attempting to reach a political compromise with the BJP.
Recalling an earlier statement attributed to Sukhbir Badal about leaders joining the BJP, Pannu said Badal had once remarked that such leaders should undergo a “DNA test”.
“I am not saying that anyone’s DNA should actually be tested, but when Sukhbir Badal himself made that statement, it is worth mentioning today,” he said.
Pannu alleged that the Badal family’s repeated changes in position had exposed what he described as the Akali Dal’s politics of convenience. He asserted that Punjab’s people had rejected the SAD’s politics and would not be influenced by what he termed the party’s latest efforts to seek political accommodation with the BJP.
