At least eight people were killed and another injured in an overnight attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters in Cameroon’s Far North region, local sources said on Saturday.
The assault took place at around 11 p.m. local time on Friday in Kangaleri village in the Mayo-Sava division. The attackers reportedly entered the village under the cover of darkness before fleeing the area, according to local sources.
Six residents were killed at the scene, while three others were seriously wounded and taken to hospital. Two of the injured later succumbed to their injuries, while the third remained under medical treatment on Saturday.
Authorities had not yet provided an official account of the attack or confirmed the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
In a separate incident on the same night, suspected Boko Haram fighters were reportedly seen in Tourou, a town in the Mokolo district near the Nigerian border. Local sources said the attackers looted shops and livestock and damaged a market on the outskirts of the town. No deaths were reported in that incident.
The latest violence comes less than a month after another Boko Haram attack in the Far North.
On July 13, a woman was killed and four Cameroonian soldiers were injured when militants attacked an army outpost in Tourou village in the Mokolo subdivision of the Mayo-Tsanaga department. An infant was also seriously injured after being shot during the raid.
The attackers reportedly took military equipment before withdrawing. The wounded soldiers and the infant were taken to a regional hospital for treatment.
The July attack came only hours after government forces had repelled another Boko Haram assault in the same area, killing two militants and injuring several others.
Boko Haram has conducted attacks in Cameroon’s Far North region since 2014, causing significant loss of life and widespread damage to property and livelihoods.
