NCP (SP) MPs to Meet PM Modi on Monday Over Maharashtra Issues, FCRA Bill and Delimitation

A delegation of eight Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MPs will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to raise a range of pressing issues concerning Maharashtra, party MP Supriya Sule said on Saturday.

Sule said the Prime Minister’s Office has scheduled the meeting for 11 a.m. at Modi’s Parliament office. The delegation had sought the appointment amid disruptions in parliamentary proceedings, which, she said, had prompted the MPs to approach the Prime Minister directly on matters affecting the state.

The issues to be raised include water shortages, farmer suicides, challenges arising from rapid urbanisation and difficulties in utilising the Rs 5 crore allocated to MPs under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), which Sule attributed to inadequate assistance from the state government.

Sule also reiterated the NCP (SP)’s opposition to the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) in their present form. She demanded that the government either withdraw the bill or refer it to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed examination.

On the controversy surrounding student protests at Jantar Mantar and the NEET issue, Sule called for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the incidents. She also sought an inquiry into reports of pellet guns and tear gas being used while Parliament premises were locked.

Addressing speculation over the proposed Delimitation Bill, Sule said no official draft had yet been introduced and therefore the party had not finalised its position.

She said leaders of the INDIA bloc meet daily at 10 a.m. under Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and that the NCP (SP) would formulate its response after consulting alliance partners, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Trinamool Congress, once the bill is formally tabled.
