Punjab Police have arrested a third accused in connection with the August 1 grenade attack on the Police Post Urban Estate in Batala, with investigators alleging that the suspect was linked to an ISI-backed terror module operated by a Portugal-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) mastermind.
The arrest was made by Counter Intelligence (CI) Jalandhar in a joint intelligence-led operation with Batala Police as part of the ongoing drive to strengthen security in the state, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Saturday.
The accused has been identified as Karanjit Singh alias Bacha, a resident of Murgi Mohalla in Batala.
The development follows the earlier arrest of two persons, including Rajan alias Gullu and a juvenile, in connection with the grenade attack on the Police Post Urban Estate on August 1.
According to the DGP, preliminary investigation has indicated that Karanjit Singh was an operative of an ISI-backed terror module allegedly being run by a Portugal-based BKI mastermind.
Yadav said the accused had gone into hiding following the attack and was allegedly planning similar strikes on police establishments elsewhere in Punjab. The police traced and apprehended him using technical and human intelligence inputs, he added.
The DGP said the investigation was continuing to establish the broader conspiracy and identify foreign handlers, local support networks and other forward and backward linkages of the terror module.
A case has already been registered as FIR No. 239 dated August 1, 2026, at Police Station Civil Lines, Batala, under Sections 109 and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosives Substances Act.
