A major security lapse has come to light at a district court in Kerala’s Ernakulam, where 124 articles seized in connection with criminal cases, including a Rado wristwatch, have reportedly gone missing from judicial custody.
The missing articles were deposited as case properties with the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-II. Following the discovery, police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the court’s Junior Superintendent.
According to the available details, the missing items are linked to criminal cases registered and handled between 2016 and 2026. Police have launched an investigation to determine when the articles disappeared and how they were removed from the court’s custody.
Investigators are expected to examine court records, the inventory of seized articles and the procedures followed for their storage and preservation. They will also look into whether the items were stolen in a single incident or disappeared over an extended period.
The incident has raised concerns about the security and proper management of material evidence kept within court premises.
Case properties are articles seized by investigating agencies during criminal investigations and subsequently produced before courts as evidence. Such items must be preserved until the conclusion of legal proceedings and disposed of or returned in accordance with court orders.
Their disappearance could potentially complicate ongoing or concluded criminal proceedings, particularly if any of the missing articles are required for examination or production during trial.
The exact nature and value of all 124 missing articles, as well as the period during which they disappeared, are yet to be established.
