US President Donald Trump wrapped up his midterm election campaign with rallies in Iowa and Kansas, defending the ongoing war with Iran, making claims about American intelligence capabilities and seeking to reassure voters over inflation and fuel prices.
Addressing supporters in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, Trump dismissed concerns about Chinese and Russian espionage, saying the United States was also spying on both countries and was more effective at it.
“China, Russia, they’re spying on us, sir. I said, that’s true. And we’re doing it to them also. But we do it even better. So don’t worry about it,” he told the gathering.
Trump also defended the military campaign against Iran, saying the United States had not initiated the conflict but was bringing it to an end. He claimed Iran had lost its radar systems, anti-aircraft capabilities and leadership.
“We might have gotten a little far with the leaders,” Trump said, adding that he was trying to find someone in Iran with whom to negotiate but that “nobody wants to be president”.
After speaking for more than two hours in Dubuque, Trump travelled to Salina, Kansas, for the final rally of his midterm campaign.
There, he focused on the economy, claiming inflation had fallen to 1.7 per cent over the preceding three months. He blamed former President Joe Biden for the high prices he said he had inherited.
Trump also claimed that he had prevented Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and said oil prices were lower than during the administrations of Biden and Barack Obama.
Predicting a further decline in fuel prices after the war, he described the current increase as “a very small price to pay” for US and global security.
Americans will vote on Tuesday, November 3, in midterm elections that will determine control of both chambers of Congress — the House of Representatives and the Senate.
