A woman was allegedly gang-raped and her husband brutally assaulted by five men in Subhasgram in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. Police have arrested one accused, while a search is underway for the remaining four.
According to a state police source, the arrest was made on Sunday morning. The other four accused named in the complaint are still absconding.
The woman, a housewife who is not a resident of the locality, had visited Subhasgram with her husband to meet a relative. The area falls under Ward No. 21 of the Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality.
The incident allegedly took place around 1.30 a.m. on the intervening night of October 30 and 31. The couple was on its way to another house in the locality when five young men allegedly followed them and blocked their path.
According to the victim’s police complaint, the accused severely beat up her husband. When she screamed for help, one of the men allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened her with serious consequences if she did not stop shouting.
The woman was then allegedly dragged into a nearby vacant room and raped. The complaint states that while one accused sexually assaulted her, the other four held her hands and legs.
The accused also allegedly threatened the woman and her husband against approaching the police or informing anyone about the incident.
Following the incident, the couple took shelter at another house in the locality for the night. On October 31, they approached Sonarpur Police Station and lodged a formal complaint.
Police registered an FIR and initiated an investigation, which led to the arrest of one accused. The remaining four, including the alleged prime accused, are yet to be apprehended.
Tension has reportedly prevailed in the area, with questions being raised locally over the delay in arresting the other accused.
