Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying he could become Prime Minister only in a “Mock Parliament” and accusing the Congress of insensitivity towards victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Referring to the Congress’s mock impeachment proceedings against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Shah said Rahul Gandhi’s prime ministerial ambitions would remain unfulfilled in the real Parliament.

“If Rahul Gandhi wants to become the Prime Minister of the country, he should spend his entire life in a Mock Parliament. In the real Parliament, your number will never come,” Shah said at an event in Chandigarh.

He claimed that Rahul Gandhi had been facing electoral defeats for 15 years and that Sonia Gandhi’s dream of seeing her son occupy the Prime Minister’s post had not materialised.

Shah also criticised the Congress for holding a rally in Delhi on November 1, the day associated with the 1984 anti-Sikh violence and part of the Sikh community’s four-day mourning period.

Accusing the party of hurting the sentiments of victims’ families, he alleged that the Congress had orchestrated the massacre of thousands of Sikhs in Delhi. He said the rally showed a lack of sensitivity towards those affected.

Shah further claimed that the Narendra Modi-led government had reopened cases against Congress leaders accused in the riots, sent guilty persons to jail, and provided compensation and jobs to victims’ families.

He also alleged that Rahul Gandhi went ahead with the rally despite requests from Sikh organisations and the BJP to defer it. Shah said traders had also appealed for the event to be held after Diwali to avoid business losses.

Separately, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri led a BJP march in West Delhi against the 1984 riots under the slogan “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy”.

Recalling the violence, Puri said his parents were in Delhi at the time and were sheltered by Hindu friends. He described the massacre as a national wound and stressed the need for justice, humanity and unity.
