Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday announced the formation of a high-level committee under the leadership of Rajya Sabha MP and environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal to recommend a permanent solution to the pollution problem in Ludhiana’s Buddha Nullah.

Chairing a meeting to review the condition of the historic water body, Mann directed the committee to submit a comprehensive report within 15 days, paving the way for concrete and time-bound measures to eliminate pollution.

The Chief Minister said restoring Buddha Nullah to its pristine condition was among the state government’s top priorities and asserted that public health and environmental protection would not be compromised.

“The people of Punjab have every right to clean water and a pollution-free environment. These are not privileges but fundamental rights of every citizen, and no compromise will be made on them. The government will not allow the health of people and the environment to be held hostage to pollution,” Mann said.

The committee will be headed by Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and include the Secretary of Local Government, representatives of the Industries Department, Punjab Pollution Control Board and Ludhiana Police, two representatives of the Dairy Complex and other concerned stakeholders.

Mann said the committee must consult local residents, industrialists, representatives of the dairy sector and administrative officials to examine all aspects of the problem and recommend practical solutions.

“The problem of Buddha Nullah cannot be resolved through temporary measures or superficial interventions. It requires a comprehensive, coordinated and permanent solution backed by strong political will,” he said.

The Chief Minister stressed that the committee should go beyond identifying the causes of pollution and suggest implementable measures with clear timelines.

He said the people of Punjab should not have to bear the consequences of pollution caused by irresponsible practices, adding that contamination of Buddha Nullah had serious implications for public health and the environment in Ludhiana and surrounding areas.

Mann also called upon government departments, industrial units and other stakeholders to work together to prevent untreated waste and pollutants from entering water bodies.

“Government departments, industrial units and all other stakeholders must work together to ensure that untreated waste and pollution do not enter our water bodies,” he said.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to making Punjab a clean, green and healthy state, Mann said protecting water resources was a collective responsibility towards future generations.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister held detailed discussions with senior administrative officials on the present condition of Buddha Nullah and the measures required to eliminate pollution and restore the water body.

Those present included Rajya Sabha MP Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, Powercom CMD Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, Secretary Water Resources Krishan Kumar, Secretary Environment and Science and Technology K.K. Yadav, Secretary Local Government Ghanshyam Thori, Secretary Agriculture Arshdeep Singh Thind, Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma and other senior officials.
