New Delhi, November 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra on Sunday joined a march in Hari Nagar demanding justice for families affected by the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, with BJP leaders and thousands of members of the Sikh community participating.

The march was organised to remember the victims and renew demands for accountability, according to a BJP statement. Participants also targeted the Congress over the violence and called for justice for families who have waited decades for answers.

Addressing the gathering, Gupta said thousands of Sikh families had lost their loved ones and that many survivors continued to live with the trauma of the killings. She questioned the Congress leadership’s claims of defending democracy, asking whether the events of November 1984 did not represent a grave assault on democratic values.

Referring to the Emergency imposed in 1975 and the anti-Sikh violence in 1984, she said those speaking about democracy today must answer questions about their own political history. Gupta described the march as an effort to give voice to the suffering of affected families.

Malhotra alleged that the violence was a planned conspiracy involving Congress leaders, claiming that Sikh homes were identified and attacks facilitated. He referred to the roles of leaders including H.K.L. Bhagat and Sajjan Kumar, and said Sikhs were targeted over a period of 72 hours.

He also criticised Rahul Gandhi for holding a programme on the anniversary of the violence, accusing him of hurting the sentiments of victim families. Malhotra credited the Special Investigation Team constituted under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government with securing action against those responsible.

Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also accused Rahul Gandhi of following his father’s political legacy in dealing with the 1984 violence.

BJP leader Arvinder Singh Lovely said the law-and-order situation had collapsed across the country during the violence. Senior advocate H.S. Phoolka referred to the killings of retired soldiers and 51 serving soldiers, while Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney recalled that members of his family were among those killed.

Malhotra announced another march near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib on Monday, where participants would pay homage at the memorial dedicated to the victims.
