Fifteen police personnel have been suspended in connection with the alleged rape of a woman inside Gamharia police station in Jharkhand’s Saraikela-Kharsawan district. Three people, including the accused wireless operator, have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiary on Sunday ordered the suspension of nine more personnel, comprising two Sub-Inspectors, four Assistant Sub-Inspectors, two Havildars and a constable. Six personnel, including the station house officer (SHO), had been suspended earlier over alleged sexual misconduct and lapses in handling the incident.
The latest action followed an inquiry into the failure of the nine personnel to inform senior officers about the alleged crime in a timely manner.
The arrested individuals include wireless operator Neeraj Lakra, who is accused of raping the woman, along with the officer on duty and the station clerk.
According to the police, the woman, a resident of Dugdha village, had reached the police station late Thursday night to lodge a complaint over a family dispute and alleged harassment by her husband. As it was late, she was advised to stay at the police station.
It is alleged that Lakra subsequently took her into a room within the police station premises and raped her.
Following a written complaint from the woman, an FIR was registered and a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by SDPO Anubhav Bhardwaj, was constituted to investigate the case.
The SIT inspected the scene and sealed the room to preserve evidence. SP Swargiary also visited the police station on Sunday as part of the inquiry.
Police said the investigation is continuing and further action would be taken against any other personnel found to have been involved or negligent.
