Chandigarh, November 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday presented the prestigious President’s Colour to the Chandigarh Police during its 60th Raising Day celebrations and reviewed the ceremonial parade, recognising the force’s six decades of service.

Addressing the gathering, Shah said the honour acknowledged the Chandigarh Police’s commitment, dedication and sensitivity towards its responsibilities.

“The conferment of the President’s Colour on the Chandigarh Police is a recognition of six decades of dedicated service, commitment, and sensitivity. On this occasion, I pay tribute to all the brave martyrs of the Chandigarh Police. Laying down one’s life in the line of duty is a matter of pride for the entire police force. Since 1966, Chandigarh Police has, through relentless efforts, written a golden chapter in the history of policing in India. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all its personnel,” he said.

Highlighting the force’s operational performance, the Home Minister said Chandigarh Police currently ranks second in the country in terms of prompt action and response time. He said the addition of 141 new vehicles would strengthen its operational capabilities and emergency services.

“I am confident that with these modern resources, Chandigarh Police will soon secure the top position in the country for response time,” he said.

Recalling the city’s experience during the period of terrorism, Shah said Chandigarh Police had demonstrated courage and dedication in maintaining peace and security in the city and surrounding regions.

He described Chandigarh as one of India’s most well-planned cities, situated in the foothills of the Shivalik range, and said it had not remained untouched by the challenges posed by terrorism.

The Home Minister also praised the force’s citizen-centric initiatives and technology-driven services, which allow people to access police assistance without having to visit a police station.

He said Chandigarh Police had successfully implemented various applications and technology-based models to make its services more accessible and efficient.

Referring to traffic management, Shah said Chandigarh had one of the highest numbers of vehicles per capita in the country, yet traffic movement remained smooth.

“I have visited Chandigarh both before and after becoming Home Minister, but I have never witnessed a traffic jam here. The Quick Response Team reaches within 10 minutes, while police personnel arrive at incident sites in just four minutes. This serves as an inspiration for police forces across the country,” he said.

Praising the implementation of the new criminal laws, Shah said Chandigarh had recorded an 85 per cent conviction rate within just 140 days.

He said effective implementation of the new criminal justice codes across the country would help citizens secure justice without having to wait for years.

The Home Minister noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the implementation of the new criminal laws from Chandigarh, replacing the colonial-era legal framework.

He also expressed confidence that Chandigarh would become the first region to be completely drug-free.

Reiterating his confidence in the force’s operational capabilities, Shah said Chandigarh ranked second nationally in response time and was among the top performers globally. He said the induction of 141 new vehicles would help the force reach the number one position among police forces in India by next year.
