Actor Suhail Nayyar, who has been receiving positive responses for his performance in the recently released film Udta Teer, believes artists should not have to sacrifice their personal happiness or well-being in the pursuit of their work.
Rejecting the idea that an artist must continue working regardless of personal struggles, Nayyar said he places equal importance on different aspects of life and does not believe in being a workaholic.
Asked about the notion that artists are often expected to be “walking wounded”, carrying their personal pain while continuing to perform professionally, he said happiness deserved equal attention.
“Let’s look at it like this. You give importance to other things in life. Happiness is important,” the actor said during a conversation in Mumbai’s Andheri West area.
Drawing a comparison with bodybuilding, Nayyar said maintaining a balance required equal commitment to different aspects of life.
“People say that in bodybuilding, it’s 80 per cent diet, 20 per cent workout. No, I feel it’s 100 per cent diet and 100 per cent workout. You have to balance everything. To each their own. You understand what’s working for you. The only best way is to reinvent yourself,” he said.
The actor also spoke about maintaining emotional detachment from the outcome of his performances. He said that while an actor could remain deeply invested in a character, several aspects of filmmaking, including the editor’s choice of takes and the final cut, remained beyond an actor’s control.
“You can be attached to the character, but attachment to the result is not a healthy thing,” he said.
Nayyar clarified that detachment did not mean indifference towards his work. Instead, he believes it helps him remain steady through both successes and disappointments.
“You don’t go crazy in happiness, you don’t go crazy when things don’t go your way. You keep going,” he added.
