Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), describing it as a “gang” rather than a political party. He claimed that a BJP defeat in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections would also pave the way for its defeat in the Lok Sabha polls.
Yadav made the remarks in Lucknow after paying floral tributes at the memorial of Acharya Narendra Dev, located on the banks of the Gomti River, on his 137th birth anniversary.
Addressing the gathering, the SP chief accused the BJP of pursuing divisive politics and creating divisions in society. He said the people of Uttar Pradesh had made up their minds to remove the party from power and asserted that losing the state would eventually cost the BJP power at the national level.
Remembering Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary, Yadav said Patel had united the princely states of independent India through his vision and efforts. He also claimed that Patel had imposed a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Describing communal forces as the biggest threat to the country, Yadav said weakening them would strengthen democracy. He added that socialists were continuously fighting the BJP and what he termed its “underground tunnel operators”.
The SP president alleged that the BJP government had merely “sold dreams” to the public. Targeting its claim of building a $1 trillion economy, he accused the party of “donation theft” and alleged that offerings and donations made to the Ram Temple had been stolen.
Yadav also accused the government of allowing adulteration through the blending of ethanol with petrol. He alleged that inflation was being used to generate profits while farmers were not receiving fair prices for their produce.
Claiming that SP workers were united against the BJP, he said people from all sections of society were prepared to teach the ruling party a lesson.
Questioning the state government’s education policies, Yadav alleged that 26,000 primary schools had been shut down in Uttar Pradesh. He further claimed that there were plans to open liquor shops in some of the closed school buildings, accusing the government of undermining education.
On healthcare, he alleged that the BJP government was weakening public hospitals while encouraging private healthcare. Citing Gorakhpur and Agra, he claimed that around 500 private hospitals each had been registered in the two cities during the BJP’s 10 years in power.
“Government hospitals are deteriorating while the number of private hospitals continues to rise, and public hospitals themselves are now in need of treatment,” he said.
Responding to a question about Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Yadav urged him to focus on Uttar Pradesh’s law-and-order situation, police conduct and alleged custodial deaths.
He questioned the number of deaths in police custody and raised concerns over crimes against women, cyber fraud and murder cases, asking why the government was not responding adequately to these issues.
Yadav also alleged that members of the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak) communities were facing harassment. He questioned why large numbers of people from these communities were in jail, alleged injustice against Muslims and criticised the use of bulldozers against the homes of people he described as innocent.
