Ghaziabad, November 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan was on Sunday remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by a Ghaziabad court in connection with a money laundering case linked to Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, a day after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The MP-MLA Court directed that Khan remain in judicial custody until November 13.
Speaking to reporters, Khan’s lawyer Danish Ali said the defence had challenged the circumstances surrounding the arrest, arguing that the case dated back to 2019 and that the ED could have initiated action through a B-Warrant while Khan was already in custody.
He also alleged a violation of Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
“The ED has sought his custody to further interrogate him,” Ali said.
Khan’s arrest on Saturday came shortly after the ED provisionally attached land and buildings belonging to Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh in connection with the money laundering investigation.
The agency has attached university assets with an estimated current market value of approximately Rs 1,170 crore, while their value at the time of provisional attachment was assessed at Rs 426.46 crore.
According to the ED, the university campus at Jauhar Nagar in Singhankhera village is owned by the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, founded and controlled by Khan, who also serves as its honorary Chancellor.
The investigation originated from 26 FIRs registered at Azeem Nagar police station in Rampur. These cases alleged that agricultural land belonging to farmers was forcibly acquired for the establishment of the university.
The ED has also alleged that nearly 34 acres of enemy property in Singhankhera village were occupied for the university despite cancellation of the land lease. The land has since been recovered by the Custodian of Enemy Property through the district administration.
Khan’s latest legal setback comes days after the Allahabad High Court suspended the sentences of Khan and his son Abdullah Khan in the dual PAN card case and granted them bail on Thursday.
