India began their men’s volleyball campaign at the Asian Games 2026 with a convincing 3-0 win over Vietnam in their opening Pool C match at Aichi-Nagoya.
India prevailed 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 to make a winning start to their campaign.
The Indian team had to work hard in the opening set, with Vietnam keeping the pressure on. India, however, held their nerve at crucial stages to take a 1-0 lead.
India carried that momentum into the second set and looked more assured, securing it 25-21. They maintained their composure in the third set and closed out the match 25-20.
The 16-team men’s volleyball competition has been divided into four pools of four teams. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarter-finals, while classification matches will determine the remaining positions.
India are placed in Pool C alongside Vietnam, Hong Kong China and Qatar. Their remaining pool-stage matches are against Hong Kong China and Qatar.
The Volleyball Federation of India has selected a 12-member squad for the continental event, with setter Muthusamy Appavu the senior member. Jerome Vinith Charles and Muhammad Nihal Chatham Kulangara are among the other notable players in the squad.
There is no Indian representation in the women’s volleyball event at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
Volleyball made its Asian Games debut at Tokyo in 1958, where India won the bronze medal. The Indian men’s team have won three medals in the history of the event — silver in 1962 and bronze in 1958 and 1986.
At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, India finished sixth after losing to Pakistan in the classification stage.
