Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani has described his recently released streaming series The Revolutionaries as his “Test cricket” after the experience he gained making historical dramas such as Rocket Boys and Freedom at Midnight.
Speaking to IANS alongside actors Bhuvan Bam, Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta and Gurfateh Pirzada, Advani said his earlier projects had given him extensive preparation for the scale and demands of The Revolutionaries.
“I had a lot of practice already. My Ranji Trophy I had already played and IPL I had already played with Rocket Boys and Freedom at Midnight. I had come to Test cricket with this,” he said.
Advani said the groundwork laid through his earlier shows extended to the production team as well.
“I had done Rocket Boys and Freedom at Midnight, I had set the groundwork, even the team, even the production, everybody knew what we were getting into. With every show that we have done, it has become bigger and bigger and bigger. With The Revolutionaries, we pushed the envelope further,” he said.
He highlighted the scale of the production, noting that Freedom at Midnight featured a three-acre set and 96 sets, while The Revolutionaries involved a six-acre set and around 110-120 sets.
Advani said the project began when Prime Video acquired the rights to Sanjeev Sanyal’s acclaimed book Revolutionaries: The Other Story Of How India Won Its Freedom and approached him about adapting it.
The series, created and directed by Advani, explores the stories of freedom fighters Rash Behari Bose, Pratibha Lahiri, Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Bagha Jatin, who fought against the British Raj and believed armed resistance was essential to India’s freedom struggle.
Inspired by true events, the series also stars Jason Shah and is produced by Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani under the Emmay Entertainment banner. The Revolutionaries is streaming on Prime Video.
