India fast bowler Kranti Gaud has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during India’s 72-run victory over Sri Lanka in the Women’s Asia Cup final at the Dubai International Stadium.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday that Gaud committed a Level 1 breach of Article 2.5 of the Player Code of Conduct, which relates to language, actions or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter after their dismissal.
The incident occurred during the opening over of Sri Lanka’s chase when Gaud bowled opener Imesha Dulani and then gestured towards the pavilion.
Along with the financial penalty, one demerit point has been added to Gaud’s disciplinary record. It is her first offence in a 24-month period.
The sanction was proposed by match referee Supriya Rani Das of the ICC International Panel following charges brought by on-field umpires Saleema Imtiaz and Shathira Jakir Jesy. Third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Humaira Farah were also involved in the match officials’ panel.
The ICC said Gaud admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, meaning a formal hearing was not required. Level 1 breaches can attract a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee and a maximum of two demerit points.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in Sunday’s final to win a record-extending eighth Women’s Asia Cup title and regain the trophy they lost in 2024.
However, India’s Harmanpreet Kaur-led team did not accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
In a separate ruling, Pakistan players were fined five per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate during their semi-final defeat to Sri Lanka on Friday.
Match referee G.S. Lakshmi imposed the sanction after Pakistan were found to be one over short of their required rate after time allowances were taken into account.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team falls short of the required rate. Pakistan captain Fatima Sana pleaded guilty and accepted the sanction.
