Actor Deven Bhojani has opened up about his 25-year camaraderie with filmmaker Aatish Kapadia, director of the recently released streaming show ‘Chumbak’, and praised the energy and creative understanding they share on set.
Bhojani, who has been receiving positive response for his performance in the Netflix series, spoke to IANS along with Sandeepa Dhar, Sumeet Vyas, Sumeet Raghavan, Neena Gupta and Manasi Parekh during the show’s promotions in Mumbai’s BKC area.
Praising Kapadia’s leadership, Bhojani said the director acts as the “glue” that holds the entire unit together while encouraging actors to give their best.
“He has so much energy in that man… the whole unit becomes energetic because of that,” Bhojani said, adding that Kapadia’s alertness and positive approach often stay with him even after he returns home from a day’s shoot.
The actor also spoke about the deep professional understanding they have developed over the years. He said their tuning is such that they can sometimes understand each other instantly, even referring to specific scenes by their numbers.
Bhojani said their relationship extends beyond work, describing Kapadia as a very good personal friend. At the same time, he stressed that their professional equation is based on honesty and mutual respect.
“If I were to elaborate that, let’s say there is a character that I think I can fit in, I don’t think, ‘Why didn’t he approach me?’,” he said.
He added that he is equally comfortable telling Kapadia when he does not want to take up a particular role, rather than allowing their friendship to influence professional decisions.
‘Chumbak’ is currently streaming on Netflix.
