A night guard at a school in West Bengal’s Asansol sustained serious injuries after being shot while resisting an alleged robbery attempt on a deserted road, police said on Sunday.
The guard, identified as Haridas Layek, was travelling by motorcycle to Srihari Global School in West Burdwan district on Saturday night when a group of masked men allegedly intercepted him on National Highway 19.
According to police, the robbers forced Layek to stop, brandished weapons and attempted to take his valuables. When he resisted, the attackers allegedly fired two rounds, hitting him in the leg.
Despite being injured, Layek continued to resist the attackers. The robbers eventually left him on the road and fled.
Police from Salanpur Police Station reached the spot after receiving information and rescued Layek in an injured condition. He was taken to Asansol District Hospital, where doctors operated on his leg the same night. His condition was reported to be stable.
Layek, who is from Dhaguri village under Alladi Panchayat in the Salanpur area, reportedly travels to the school on his motorcycle every night for his duty.
On Sunday morning, police recovered an empty cartridge casing from the scene. A search operation has been launched to trace the attackers, while naka checks are being conducted in the area.
Police are also examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to identify the suspects.
Senior police officials, including Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Pranab Kumar, DC (West) Sana Akhtar and DC (Central) Dhruba Das, visited the scene as investigators continued their probe.
The incident, which occurred on a deserted road at night, has caused concern among local residents.
