A year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, Mizoram is witnessing a significant transformation in connectivity, freight movement and access to markets, with the project giving the northeastern state a new logistics identity, officials said on Sunday.
Inaugurated on September 13, 2025, the railway line connects Bairabi in southern Assam with Sairang near Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, placing Aizawl on India’s railway map for the first time.
Railway officials said the project has compressed travel distances, expanded mobility options and opened new opportunities for trade, tourism and enterprise in the remote hill state.
For generations, Mizoram’s challenging terrain made long-distance movement heavily dependent on roads, often making travel time-consuming and unreliable. The commissioning of the Bairabi-Sairang line has significantly altered that situation by bringing passenger and freight railway services close to the state’s largest centre of population, administration, education and commerce.
The railway line itself is a major engineering feat, passing through steep hills, deep valleys and gorges. The project includes 153 bridges — 55 major, 88 minor and 10 Road Over Bridges/Road Under Bridges — besides 45 tunnels spanning nearly 16 km.
Six of the bridges are more than 70 metres high, with the tallest standing at 114 metres, around 42 metres higher than Delhi’s Qutub Minar.
The corridor extends from Bairabi through four newly developed stations — Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and finally Sairang — bringing rail connectivity to the doorstep of Aizawl.
Three major long-distance services now connect Mizoram’s capital with Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express provided Mizoram with its first direct premium rail link to the national capital, while services to Guwahati and Kolkata have strengthened access to major educational, commercial and medical centres.
The Sairang-Silchar passenger service, inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in January 2026, has also provided regular connectivity between Sairang and southern Assam.
Over the past year, these services have completed more than 1,100 trips and carried over 15 lakh passengers, underscoring their growing importance in the daily lives of people in Mizoram.
The services have generated around Rs 54 crore in ticket revenue for Indian Railways. Sairang railway station alone has handled more than 5.54 lakh passenger movements over the year, with an average of around 3,300 passengers visiting the station each day.
Beyond passenger movement, the station has emerged as part of the surrounding community, with local residents undertaking tree plantation and other environmental initiatives around the station complex.
The railway line has also transformed freight transportation in Mizoram, enabling essential commodities, automobiles and construction materials to reach Aizawl in a safer, faster and more cost-effective manner.
Officials said the Bairabi-Sairang project has, within a year, demonstrated how infrastructure can translate into improved mobility, stronger market access and new economic opportunities for a remote region.
