Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warm ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were on full display at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday, with the three leaders seen holding hands, exchanging smiles and sharing informal moments at Bharat Mandapam.
Sharing glimpses from the summit on X, Modi posted: “BRICS Summit 2026 gets underway in Delhi.”
The visuals from New Delhi echoed similar scenes at the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek last month, where Modi, Putin and Xi were seen smiling and shaking hands during the official family photograph on August 31.
The three leaders had also shared several informal moments during the 2025 SCO Plus Summit in Tianjin on August 31-September 1. Modi was seen embracing Putin, walking alongside Xi and Putin, and interacting with both leaders, highlighting the personal rapport among them.
The latest visuals came after Modi welcomed BRICS leaders at Bharat Mandapam, the venue for the two-day summit being held on September 12 and 13.
The Prime Minister warmly received Putin, Xi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other participating leaders.
India’s BRICS Chairship is guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, with a focus on a people-centric approach rooted in the spirit of “Humanity First”, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Addressing the opening session on “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism”, Modi said India’s BRICS Chairship had placed special emphasis on connecting the grouping’s cooperation with ordinary people.
“Resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability have been our priorities,” Modi said, noting that more than 350 meetings had been organised across approximately 30 cities during India’s chairship.
He said BRICS had established a distinct identity on the global stage and stressed that the grouping was “not against anyone”, calling for an approach that takes everyone along.
Modi also proposed the creation of a “BRICS Continuity and Implementation” mechanism to ensure sustained progress in the grouping’s initiatives.
