Punjab is currently receiving 1,051 MW less electricity than its allocated share from the Central Power Pool, Power and Public Works Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond said on Saturday, urging the Centre to immediately ensure the state gets its full entitlement.
Emphasising the importance of uninterrupted electricity supply for Punjab’s agriculture sector, Sond said adequate power availability was essential for farmers as well as the state’s economy.
“Punjab is an agrarian state and adequate and uninterrupted power supply is essential for our farmers and the state’s economy. The Centre should immediately provide Punjab its due share from the Central Power Pool,” he said.
The Minister said he had also written to the Union Power Minister, urging the Centre to ensure that Punjab receives its full and rightful share from the Central Power Pool.
Sond rejected allegations of a coal shortage at Punjab government-owned thermal power plants, saying the state had adequate coal supplies following the operationalisation of the Pachhwara coal mine.
“Due to the concerted efforts of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab has already operationalised the Pachhwara coal mine, ensuring adequate availability of coal for the state’s own power generation facilities,” he said.
“Punjab has started operations at its Pachhwara coal mine and we now have sufficient coal available. The issue is with the supply of coal to the private thermal power plants, for which Coal India is responsible,” Sond added.
He said the private thermal power plants at Talwandi Sabo and Rajpura were facing coal-supply issues that needed to be addressed by Coal India.
Punjab has 10 thermal power generating units, comprising four each at Lehra Mohabbat and Ropar and two at Goindwal Sahib. The Talwandi Sabo and Rajpura plants are operated by private companies.
Sond said a technical fault affecting one of the units had been rectified by PSPCL officials and efforts were underway to restore the remaining units at the private thermal power plants at the earliest.
“Our government and PSPCL are closely monitoring the power situation and taking all necessary measures to ensure reliable electricity supply,” he said.
The Minister reiterated that the state government remained committed to protecting the interests of Punjab’s farmers and ensuring adequate power availability, particularly during periods of high demand.
PSPCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Dr Basant Garg and Director (Generation) Er. Punerdeep Singh Brar were also present.
