The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday opposed the removal of four papers covering the history of Punjab from the postgraduate History syllabus at Panjab University, terming the move a disservice to the preservation of the state’s rich historical heritage.
Senior SAD leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said the four papers offered students an opportunity to study Punjab’s history across four significant periods—from the 15th to the 17th century, the 18th century, the 19th century and the 20th century.
Cheema said these components of the postgraduate curriculum should not be altered or removed, given their importance to understanding Punjab’s historical and cultural legacy.
He said he had taken up the matter with the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University as well as the Head of the Department of History. According to Cheema, both had assured him that the decision would be reversed shortly and that the earlier syllabus would be restored in its entirety.
The SAD leader also urged the university authorities to ensure that decisions concerning subjects carrying deep cultural and historical significance for Punjabis were not repeated in future.
“Punjab’s history must remain an integral and respected part of the academic study,” Cheema said.
