Iran, Iraq and Turkey have stressed the need to prevent any further escalation of tensions and the spread of conflicts in West Asia, as regional diplomatic consultations continued amid heightened instability.
The issue figured in separate telephone conversations Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held with his Turkish and Iraqi counterparts on Saturday, according to statements issued by Iran’s Foreign Ministry early Sunday.
During his conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Araghchi discussed the latest developments in the region. Both sides emphasised the importance of preventing further escalation and stopping regional conflicts from expanding, while calling for continued consultations and diplomatic efforts to promote stability and peace.
In a separate call with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Araghchi reviewed bilateral relations, regional developments and ongoing processes. The two officials stressed the importance of maintaining security and stability along the Iran-Iraq border and continuing coordination between the two countries.
They also called for responsible approaches to developments in the region and urged efforts to prevent conflicts from escalating or spreading further.
Meanwhile, Iran and Oman have finalised details of new entry and exit routes for the Strait of Hormuz and are expected to brief Gulf countries on the outcome of their consultations at a regional meeting in Muscat on Monday, Iranian officials said.
According to semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing a source close to Iran’s negotiating team, the understanding followed intensive technical and diplomatic discussions between Iran and Oman that culminated in a final agreement in late August.
Under the arrangement, the entry route into the Gulf would lie entirely within Iranian territorial waters, while part of the exit route would also pass through Iranian waters, the source said.
The source added that the route would operate under Iranian arrangements and that the southern route of the waterway would be closed once the new system becomes operational. The United States, however, had insisted that the southern route should remain open.
