Actress and author Soha Ali Khan has opened up about the challenges of parenting her eight-year-old daughter, Inaaya Naumi Kemmu, while discussing the right age to introduce children to conversations around sexuality.
Soha spoke about the subject during the latest episode of her podcast ‘All About Her’, which featured author, researcher and storyteller Dr. Seema Anand and author, content creator and sexual wellness advocate Leeza Mangaldas.
The discussion explored how women can develop a better understanding of their desires, approach sexual pleasure without shame and have more informed conversations about intimacy and relationships. It also touched on the question of when and how children should be introduced to age-appropriate conversations about sexuality.
Sharing a personal parenting experience, Soha revealed that books related to the podcast had recently been lying on her dining table. With Inaaya now eight and able to read, the actress said she wondered whether she should keep such material away from her daughter to avoid questions she might not yet be prepared to answer.
“These books (The Art of Seduction and Speak Easy) have been on my dining table as well over the past couple of weeks, and my daughter’s eight and she can read now,” Soha said.
She recalled that Inaaya had recently been going through her cue cards and that she considered removing cards related to the podcast because her daughter might ask questions about them. However, Soha said Inaaya ended up looking at the cards related to former IPS officer Kiran Bedi instead.
“She went through the Kiran Bedi ones and she didn’t go through these ones, so she was asking other questions,” Soha said.
Soha is married to actor Kunal Kemmu. The couple began dating in 2009 and got married in an intimate ceremony in Mumbai on January 25, 2015. They welcomed their daughter Inaaya on September 29, 2017.
The couple has generally maintained privacy around their family life, although they occasionally share glimpses of parenting and their life with Inaaya.
