Nandita Das Pays Tribute to Gloria Steinem, Says Her Passing ‘Feels Like the End of an Era’

Chennai, September 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Actor, filmmaker, writer and producer Nandita Das has paid an emotional tribute to feminist icon and women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem, saying her passing feels like “the end of an era.”

Taking to Instagram, Das remembered Steinem’s decades-long contribution as a journalist, writer and activist, highlighting how she challenged established power structures and pushed for women to be heard, respected and treated as equals.

Das recalled meeting Steinem for the first time nearly two decades ago and described a more recent encounter with her in New York as a rare and deeply meaningful experience. She said Steinem was warm, sharp, thoughtful and unpretentious, and equally interested in listening and speaking.

Das also recalled telling Steinem that she was one of her heroes and had opened many doors for women. She said being heard by someone she had admired while growing up was itself a gift.

Highlighting Steinem’s connection with India, Das noted that the feminist icon spent nearly two years in the country during her twenties, travelling, observing and learning from grassroots movements. According to Das, Steinem often spoke about how those experiences shaped her understanding of the world.

Das said she has long believed that immersing oneself in unfamiliar places, people and experiences offers a unique form of learning.

Concluding her tribute, Das remembered Steinem as someone who lived a purposeful 92-year life and inspired people to believe that a different world was possible.

“Thank you, Gloria,” Das said in her heartfelt farewell.
